JLA
#1~Them!
The President
calls Superman to investigate a giant spaceship at the White House when
eight beings step out and introduce themselves as the Hyperclan.
Their leader, Protex, explains how millions of years ago, their home planet
was destroyed by its inhabitants, leaving the superhuman survivors to roam
the galaxy. He states that they would not let the same happen to
Earth and the next day they turn the Sahara Desert into lush gardens.
As Superman goes public with his idea that changing the environment so
drastically could prove more harm than good, the public begins to question
why other superheroes had never made the contributions the Hyperclan did.
Next, the Hyperclan brutally kills several superhuman villains, dropping
the national crime rate 60% in a day. Meanwhile, Green Lantern and
Wonder Woman are helping the past team move out of the JLA Satellite when
the structure is attacked. Metamorpho sacrifices himself to safely
return Ice Maiden, Nuklon, and Obsidian to Earth while the other two fight
the attackers off. However, the satellite explodes and GL and Wonder
Woman return to Earth to meet with the other Leaguers (minus Aquaman who
neglects to respond). Batman proposes the idea of mind control and
that the Hyperclan is part of a planned invasion of Earth. He suggests
they make plans, move fast, and hit hard.

#2~The Day the Earth Stood Still
As the
Hyperclan establishes three bases--in the Pacific, the Gobi Desert, and
the Antarctic Martian city of Z'onn Z'orr, Superman and Green Lantern discover
the spaceship over the White House is only a projection, but fail to find
any orbital mind control transmitters. Martian Manhunter decides
it's best for the team to split up and attack each of the three new bases
and destroy their transmitting facilities. Wonder Woman checks the
Pacific base where she meets Aquaman, and they are confronted by Fluxus--the
Hyperclan's shapeshifter--and Tronix--one of the Hyperclan's two females.
They state to the Leaguers that Earth will belong to the Hyperclan and
manage to defeat both Wonder Woman and Aquaman. Meanwhile in the
Gobi, Green Lantern and Flash are attacked by the speedster Zum, the giant
robot Armek, and the soldier Zenturion, who also overthrow their Leaguers.
Elsewhere, J'onn is secretly meeting with Protex who offers the Martian
membership with the Hyperclan. Batman and Superman meet similar fates
as the others when they're attacked by Primaid and the ghostly A-Mortal
at Z'onn Z'orr. A-Mortal crashes the Batplane, though neglects to
check the flaming wreckage. Protex claims victory as he pulls some
Kryptonite on the last remaining Leaguer, telling Superman the world will
soon be on its knees.

#3~War of the Worlds
Knowing
the Hyperclan thinks he's dead, Batman sneaks into the Z'onn Z'orr base
and disables some monitor robots. Racing around the world, Flash
thinks up a quick plan that takes out Zum. Still in the Gobi, Green
Lantern is about to meet his doom when Zenturion and Armek make the mistake
of thinking Kyle's ring has the yellow impurity. He uses that time
to his advantage and takes them down with Flash's help. Together
they enter the Gobi base and find news reports of Superman being captured
by the Hyperclan for attempting to kill Protex. He's to be publicly
executed! Just then Armek and Zenturion come to and reveal to the
Leaguers that Martian Manhunter has betrayed them. Back in Antarctica,
the four unconscious JLA members are placed into a torture device called
the Flower of Wrath as Superman watches on. A-Mortal becomes suspicious
at the loss of monitor reports and is defeated by Batman when he decides
to check them out. After some time, Tronix, Zenturion, and Fluxus
go to see what's taking A-Mortal so long to return. They unknowingly
walk into a room ringed with gasoline as Batman reveals he knows their
secret--the Hyperclan are actually Martians. They have all the powers
J'onn does and they wouldn't check the Batplane's wreckage because of the
flames. He sets the room on fire, taking down three more of the Hyperclan.
Elsewhere, Protex panics and calls his backup--70 more Martians who have
been waiting just outside "real space"--to attack Earth.
JLA
#4~Invaders from Mars
As alarms
all over the world signal warning of the invasion, Superman realizes something--he
can hear them. Why hasn't the Kryptonite killed me yet, he wonders.
Then he realizes there is no Kryptonite; it's just more mind control.
Finally making the connection himself that the Hyperclan are Martians,
Superman breaks free of his shackles and engages Protex in battle.
As Primaid tells Armek to activate the Flower of Wrath, "Armek" reveals
he's actually Martian Manhunter and the real Armek is still in the Gobi
Desert. Protex and Primaid both return to their natural forms; Protex
surrounds Superman and the two dive toward the center of the Earth while
Primaid takes her battle with J'onn outside. Just as Zum and Armek
reach Z'onn Z'orr, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Flash, and Green Lantern break
free of the Flower. Flash and GL finish Armek with fire, Aquaman
uses his mind to give Zum seizures, and Wonder Woman wrestles Primaid to
her end. Meanwhile, Protex spins the tale of his Pale Martian race
and their banishment to the "Still Zone" as he attempts to defeat Superman.
Superman of course wins, though, just as Batman comes in dragging the four
he defeated earlier. The team then uses the Hyperclan's equipment
and Superman broadcasts to the world that the Martians can be stopped with
fire. The invasion is stopped and the world is saved. The Sahara
decays, unable to support the life the Hyperclan put there, and Martian
Manhunter is put in charge of the Pale Martians' judgement. Remnants
of the destroyed JLA Satellite are used as the building foundations for
the new JLA Watchtower, placed on the Moon as Earth's first line of defense.
JLA
#5~Woman of Tomorrow
Superman,
in his new electric energy form, attends the small funeral for Metamorpho
then heads to the Watchtower to begin interviewing potential new members
for the team. Following remarks that the JLA is a group only for
the elite, the team decided to up its permanent roster to twelve members.
After what seems to be all the applicants leave, one new face enters the
Watchtower--Tomorrow Woman. Welcomed as the first official new Leaguer,
Tomorrow Woman joins the team in battling IF, an element of pure destruction
that no one can seem to understand. What the League doesn't know,
however, is that their newest member is actually an artificial intelligence
created by the joint effort of Professor Ivo and T. O. Morrow. The
android has been programmed to infiltrate and destroy the JLA as her two
creators look on. When Batman finally discovers that IF is a dangerous
weapon from the future accidentally gone wild, Tomorrow Woman becomes the
only person able to stop it. Ivo and Morrow are awaiting the electromagnetic
pulse their creation will release, destroying the League. However,
Tomorrow Woman senses she's "a bad person deep inside somewhere" and sacrifices
herself to disable IF. One more surprise comes out, though, when
Morrow reveals to Ivo that he suspected Tomorrow Woman would turn good
and created her just to prove he could create a better artificial intelligence.
The two are captured by the League, and everything ends just as it began,
with Superman attending Tomorrow Woman's funeral.
