Zauriel was once a Guardian Angel in Heaven's Eagle Host until he renounced his immortality for falling in love with the woman he was assigned to protect.  Followed to Earth by Angels of Bull Host, a group planning to unseat God and take over Heaven, Zauriel was victorious only with the aid of the Justice League.  Afterward, Zauriel was offered membership, which he temporarily declined, but finally joined on during the recruitment of the other new members.  His experience with spiritual and supernatural conflict make him a valuable team member, as does his wisdom of the ages, purity of principles, and his undying faith in God.
